The Quiet Kind of Strong

The series opener — on inheritance, endurance, and what we carry without naming.

STILL JUNETHE QUIET KIND OF STRONGTHE PREFACE

This series is about a kind of strength that rarely gets named.
The kind that doesn’t look impressive from the outside.
The kind that shows up in ordinary days and keeps going.
It’s about the women who learned to disappear inside their care for others.
Our grandmothers, who erased themselves for their families.
Our mothers, who were taught that doing it all quietly was just part of love.
They carried more than anyone ever saw —
and taught us, often without meaning to, to do the same.
I wrote this to say: that work mattered.
And to begin naming what we don’t have to carry alone anymore.

The Quiet Kind of Strong

They didn’t call it strength.

They didn’t call it anything.

Just did what needed doing.

Held what needed holding.

Swallowed what couldn’t be said.

And carried on.

Their names don’t live in books.

Their stories were not recorded.

But I know them.

By the way I flinch when I drop something loud.

By the way I laugh when I want to cry.

By the way I keep going.

They taught without teaching —

passed down the knowing

in the way a hand rests on a shoulder,

in the way a back bends without question,

in the way a woman keeps showing up

long after she’s already left her body.

They stitched their strength into bread dough,

into bathwater,

into the silence after everyone else went to bed.

They held the world together with twine and patience.

And no one saw it.

But I see it.

I feel it in my bones — this quiet inheritance.

What they carried was never just theirs.

They folded it into us —

into the curve of our spines,

into the way we say “I’m fine

and mean “I’ll survive.”

Because quiet is not the same as small.

And soft is not the same as weak.

The world forgot to thank them.

But I remember.
